Auckland & National Events

Athletics also offers children the opportunity to participate in a variety of regional and national events. Some are based on a trial and selection process, others you can simply choose to participate in of your own free will. The club will offer information over the course of the season as each of these events comes up. Below is some basic information about some of the event opportunities available.

Interprovincial Championships (12-13 Yr Olds & U16-U18 Year Olds)

The interprovincial championships is for 12 – 13 year old athletes and for U16-U18 year olds. Each province in New Zealand selects a team to represent them in the competition. This event started in Easter 1979 when the first meeting was held in Nelson. There were only 5 teams present, but over the years it has grown to where every athletic centre in New Zealand, has a team represented. Each team consists of a maximum of 44 athletes and 8 adults. Every athlete must be able to compete in 4 events, excluding relays. They must also be a combination of track and field events. Athletes score points for each event and this goes towards the team total. Relays are included in the overall total. The points are based on the decathlon scoring system. There are no semi-finals, finals or individual placings.

Any Waitakere Athlete who fits the age criteria can trial for the Interprovincial squad.

U16-U18 IP’s will take a different form in 2022. Follow the Facebook page: (12) Auckland U18 Interprovincials | Facebook  for more information as it comes to hand. You do need to register your interest to participate as soon as possible.

The U12-13 IP’s will also take a format in 2022. Please email the club for more information wcac365@gmail.com
