Athletics also offers children the opportunity to participate in a variety of regional and national events. Some are based on a trial and selection process, others you can simply choose to participate in of your own free will. The club will offer information over the course of the season as each of these events comes up. Below is some basic information about some of the event opportunities available.
Auckland & National Events
10/11 & 12/13 Year Team Challenge
The Auckland Centre and various other Aotearoa regions are bringing back a team competition for the grade 10/11yr and 12/13 year groups. Squads will be selected from 2 established areas in the Auckland center-area – Counties Manukau, Central/West Auckland and North Auckland, alongside Bay of Plenty/Waikato regions (other regions may join as the initiative progresses)/
The event is now in it’s third year, with the CNW (our area) being the winners of both the 10/11s Challenge and the 12/13s Challenge in 2025.
The points for the competition are based on the 5 Star athletics scoring charts. All athletes receive a certificate at prize giving with their total points across their individual events determining which level of certificate they achieve.
The team awards are a based on a combined total of the individual awards for each team.
Who is this event for – This event is for any registered Grade 10/ 11yr and 12/13y athletes in the Auckland Centre. Note – the junior rules apply that is athletes who are aged 10/11yr on Dec 31st 2024.
The 2026 10/11 and 12/13 year Challenge will be held at Massey Park, Papakura Athletics on the 31st January, 2026. More information for athletes interested in registering will be made available in the next few months.

Auckland Track & Field Championships
The Auckland Champs is an opportunity for athletes to compete in their preferred events against athletes from all across Auckland. Any athlete can compete in the Auckland Champs in a variety of events.
The Auckland Senior T & F Champs (U14 +) 2026 will be held in February at Mt Smart Stadium. (More info to follow.
The Auckland Junior T & F Champs (7-14yrs) 2026 will be held in February at Mt Smart Stadium.

Pentathlon
In the junior pentathlon, athletes compete in five different events and accrue points to achieve the highest number. Any Waitakere athlete can participate in the Pentathlon.
The Junior and Senior Athletic Pentathlon competitions for Auckland are still TBC for the 2025/26 season.
Colgate Games
The Colgate Games are the biggest junior athletics competition held in NZ and are held over three days in the North Island and the South Island in January each year. Each event attracts anywhere from 1000 to 1500 young athletes aged from 7 to 14 years of age. Anyone can attend the Colgate Games as long as they are registered with an athletics club.
In 2025 they are being held:
- Friday 9th to Sunday 11th January 2026 in TAURANGA
- Friday 16th to Sunday 18th January 2026 in Nelson
